Ramspol surge barrier, Ens, 1997-2001
The Ramsdiep and Ramsgeul waterways required a surge barrier to prevent flooding of the hinterland under high water conditions. We devised a new kind of barrier whose main component is an inflatable dam. In size and operation it resembles an air pressure supported tennis hall, but underwater. The control buildings for the barrier form a visual straight line. They make up a linear, technical element which is superimposed on a much older, part-natural, irregular landscape.
