The Bollard, Schiedam, 2001
Two existing watercourses are linked together to create a dividing boundary in the neighbourhood and to give these new buildings a distinct location. The buildings must be sited as detached elements with regard to their surroundings so that they stand out from the context. Other means are used to accentuate the difference further. The rendered finish differs from the dominant brickwork of the surrounding area. Furthermore, the four blocks that make up each building are elevated in pairs at two different heights above the ground. Two of the blocks rest on top of storage lockups and the other two are poised over the water. To accentuate their intimate character, individual blocks are rendered in different colours of stucco.
