In urban design terms, the concept is based on the creation of contrasts. A strong, formidable backbone made up of row houses is surrounded by a ‘swarm’ of detached and semidetached houses which are scattered in a seemingly arbitrary pattern. A structure of islands is created, enabling siting of houses at the waterside. The water, along with open views and airiness, is the atmospherically determining factor of the neighbourhood. The water also has an ecological function: planted vegetation can provide water purification, allowing rainwater to be discharged directly to surface water.
