The Wheel Houses, Druten, 1998

Stichting Bouwen aan de Dijk held a competition for dyke houses designed by young architects in 1998. The Netherlands has a longstanding tradition of building houses along dykes. One of the commonest types of dyke house is a cottage built on the sloping flank of the dyke alongside the road running along the top. In some cases the roof edge is almost immediately adjacent to the road. This is the type to which Henk van Eldijk’s design is most closely related.
