Palmboom en Van der Bout, H+N+S Landschapsarchitecten and dRO Amsterdam
IJburg , Amsterdam, 1995
The configuration of land and water, and the composition of the island shores, together make up the landscape design for Ijburg. This has taken precedence over the urban design of the islands. These will be complemented by an underwater design with gullies, shallows, submerged sandbanks etc. The urban structure of the islands is based on two main routes, a tram line and a metro line. They create a relationship to the city centre of Amsterdam and major transport links in the region. Unlike the rather arbitrary composition of the archipelago [like ice floes in the water], their urban layout is based on a simple, geometrical structure. How this will be further filled in varies from one island to another.
