Tubes, Haarlemmermeer, 2003
The area under consideration is presently polder land. At times of extreme rainfall, water from the peripheral canal (Ringvaart) will be stored temporarily in the Haarlemmermeer lake. The ‘Tubes’ house type offers a way of putting the area to good use even while peak water storage is in effect. The house stands on stilts. For 95% of the time, it can be accessed from ground level. When the area is inundated, however, a bridge system makes all the dwellings accessible from the dyke.
