Deltawerken 2.0, Arnhem-Nijmegen, 2003
In order to control peak discharges from the Rine and Waal rivers, a ‘green river’ is proposed to bypass the existing river system. Construction of the green river and its dykes will give the Arnhem-Nijmegen Node a centrally located landscape park measuring 42 kilometres in length and of variable width (average 200 metres). The park will itself act as a flood prevention barrier for the green river. Besides fulfilling its water discharging function, the green river secures a permanent, large-scale empty expanse of 3,000 ha.
