Floating city hostel, Amsterdam, 2001-2003
Youth hotel as generator. This project requires the design of facilities on the basis of a philosophy that succeeds in generating 500 guest stays. The youth hotel we have in mind aims to achieve this by addressing three themes: interest in everything new/ a hunger for experiences, communications and media, ‘I and the Other’, the encounter. Symbiotic concept: the interaction between the visitor, the building and the city is amplified by giving the building a balanced layout. The main principles for this are: a multi-storey layout in which different floors have different characteristics, an open, transparent structure, in which the hotel forecourt merges almost imperceptibly into a large, lobby-like space of the hotel itself, a structure in which spaces are multi-functional instead of a separate space designed for each activity.
